El proyecto drive-AMS ha concluido oficialmente su misión con una reunión de alto nivel celebrada en Bruselas del 16 al 18 de octubre. Los miembros del consorcio, así como otros expertos en RAM, responsables políticos y funcionarios de salud pública de toda Europa, se reunieron para pasar revista a los logros del proyecto y las lecciones aprendidas, pero también para debatir las posibilidades de ampliar el impacto de drive-AMS y hacer sostenible su legado.

Con el proyecto drive-AMS llegando a su fin, es hora de echar la vista atrás y evaluar, pero también de mirar hacia el futuro. En este artículo de entrevista, nuestros responsables nacionales de Rumanía, Lituania, Grecia y Portugal reflexionan sobre el impacto y los logros del proyecto, así como sobre los retos que acompañaron al viaje. Aunque algunas dificultades eran comunes a todos los países, otras eran específicas de los contextos nacionales. Sin embargo, lo que unió a los responsables nacionales fue su compromiso común con la innovación y la colaboración y, lo que es más importante, un consenso unánime sobre el impacto y el éxito del proyecto.

After three intense years of excellent collaboration, the drive-AMS project has officially come to an end. Time for project coordinators Erika Vlieghe and Jeroen Schouten to look back on the achievements and lessons learned.

At the end of the EU-4H financed phase of drive-AMS, Unidade Local de Saúde São João, the Portuguese partner of the project, organized a two-days meeting gathering all the sixteen Portuguese Local Health Units aboard the program. In addition to these sixteen healthcare institutions, the Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, the Portuguese Hospital Infection Association, the Portuguese Hospital Administrators Association and the Portuguese Drug Agency (Infarmed) were also represented.

In this latest edition of our AMS expert interview series, we speak with Esmée Ruizendaal, a clinical microbiologist at Radboud University Medical Center in The Netherlands, about her journey into global health, her upcoming SPICE* mission in Tanzania, and the value of collaborative mentorship in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).

As the drive-AMS project reaches its conclusion, we’re thrilled to invite you to a special Networking Event on 16 October 2025, hosted at the Thon Hotel EU in Brussels. This event is part of the three-day final meeting of the drive-AMS initiative and will bring together key voices in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) from across Europe.

On 20 and 21 October, all participating Portuguese institutions will gather in a drive-AMS-PT Long-Road Meeting, to discuss the program’s significance and future in Portugal.

We are delighted to announce that on 15 September, Ines Pauwels will publicly defend her PhD thesis titled: “Global antimicrobial prescribing patterns and the initiation of stewardship activities in hospitals within the Global-PPS network”

From 17 to 19 June 2025, Trinidad and Tobago’s capital Port of Spain became the hub of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and infection prevention and control (IPC) education, as healthcare professionals from across the Caribbean gathered for the first-ever drive-AMS Masterclass in the region.

The drive-AMS team recently had the privilege of conducting a highly interactive and impactful course in Nairobi, Kenya, focused on advancing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) practices. Organized in collaboration with The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), ReAct Africa Network, Radboudumc, Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi and other key partners, the course brought together dedicated teams from eight Kenyan centers and one Somalian center, all eager to strengthen their AMS initiatives.

Antimicrobial resistance knows no borders, and neither does drive-AMS. Following its successful implementation in Greece, Portugal, Romania and Lithuania, the drive-AMS approach is now taking root in Cyprus. With the enthusiastic leadership of Dr. Elisavet Constantinou, Dr. Markella Marcou and Dr. Linos Hadjihannas, the country has taken major steps in implementing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) at the hospital level. In a first major milestone, eight newly established AMS teams were trained in February 2025 as part of a tailor-made drive-AMS training. In this interview, Dr. Marcou and Dr. Hadjihannas reflect on their motivation, the AMR situation in Cyprus, and their expectations for the future.

The SPICE initiative (Specialized Program for Infectious Disease Care Everywhere) has now expanded its expert-led support to Greece. This effort is part of the broader drive-AMS project and aims to empower hospitals in partner countries with tailored, expert-backed AMS consultation services.

On May 21st, ULS São João brought together leaders from 16 Portuguese ULS (Local Health Units) for the national leadership meeting of the drive-AMS program—a project focused on improving antimicrobial prescribing practices through behavioral change strategies.

We’re excited to announce the Final Consortium Meeting of the drive-AMS project, taking place from 16–18 October 2025 in Brussels. This three-day event will gather partners, experts, and stakeholders from across Europe to reflect on the achievements of drive-AMS in strengthening antimicrobial stewardship and to shape the future of post-project collaboration.

At the ESCMID Global 2025 conference (Vienna, 11-15 April), the drive-AMS consortium presented key outcomes from its innovative EU-wide antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) project. The poster, titled “Implementation of hospital antimicrobial stewardship in Europe using a data-driven behaviour change approach,” showcased inspiring results from the first two years of the project.

Del 13 al 15 de febrero, un grupo de 38 profesionales sanitarios de ocho hospitales de Chipre se reunieron en Nicosia para vivir una experiencia de aprendizaje intensivo de tres días: el curso de administración de antimicrobianos drive-AMS. Organizado por el Ministerio de Sanidad de Chipre y con el apoyo de EU-JAMRAI, este evento trajo al Mediterráneo la innovadora metodología drive-AMS, dotando a los hospitales chipriotas de los conocimientos y herramientas necesarios para mejorar la administración de antimicrobianos.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant challenge to public health, particularly in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) where frail older individuals are highly vulnerable to infections. Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics, especially for suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs), contributes to the emergence of multi-resistant bacteria, threatening patient safety.

Del 29 de enero al 1 de febrero se celebró en Lituania el segundo curso nacional de drive-AMS, que reunió a 40 participantes, incluidos equipos de cuatro nuevos hospitales y un nuevo equipo de la División de Pediatría del Hospital Universitario. Este curso proporcionó una plataforma vital para ampliar las iniciativas de AMS en Lituania. Entre los asistentes se encontraba Eglė Karinauskė, una inspiradora farmacóloga clínica dedicada a la prescripción racional de antibióticos. STOP-Infección Hospitalaria es un programa de mejora de la calidad desarrollado por el Programa Prioritario de Salud portugués sobre Prevención de Infecciones y Resistencia Antimicrobiana, sembrado en la Dirección General de Salud, en colaboración con la Fundación Gulbenkian y con el apoyo del Instituto de Mejora de la Asistencia Sanitaria.

From January 29 -31, the second drive-AMS Masterclass for Rwandan hospitals took place in Kigali, bringing together teams from across the country for an intensive three-day training.

The third edition of the Portuguese drive-AMS training course recently took place, promoting strategies to support the prescription of antibiotics in eight national hospitals. It’s in line with the objective of the drive-AMS project to create measures in partner hospitals to combat antimicrobial resistance, through promoting behavioural change in prescribing doctors.

La resistencia a los antimicrobianos (RAM) es uno de los retos sanitarios más acuciantes de nuestro tiempo y amenaza con socavar décadas de progreso médico. En respuesta, el equipo drive-AMS del Centro Médico de la Universidad de Radboud, en estrecha colaboración con bioMérieux, ha reunido su amplia experiencia en una completa guía titulada "Antimicrobial Stewardship: Guía práctica para su aplicación en hospitales"."

La lucha mundial contra la resistencia a los antimicrobianos (RAM) ocupó un lugar central el 26 de septiembre de 2024, en la Reunión de Alto Nivel de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas sobre la RAM (Sede de la ONU, Nueva York, EE.UU.). Esta pandemia silenciosa reunió por segunda vez a los líderes mundiales para hacer frente a la RAM y estableció una hoja de ruta de compromisos políticos.

drive-AMS y EU-JAMRAI2, la segunda fase de la Acción Común Europea sobre la Resistencia a los Antimicrobianos (RAM) y las Infecciones Relacionadas con la Asistencia Sanitaria, están aunando sus esfuerzos, reconociendo que ambas iniciativas comparten objetivos cruciales. La EU-JAMRAI2 se dedica a ayudar a los Estados miembros de la UE a aplicar medidas específicas contra la RAM, con el objetivo último de salvaguardar la salud pública en el continente.

Como parte de drive-AMS, el equipo del Centro Médico de la Universidad Radboud de Nimega (Países Bajos) está ampliando su Registro de Expertos SPICE a Grecia, Lituania, Rumanía y Portugal. SPICE son las siglas de Specialized Programme for Infectious Disease Care Everywhere (Programa especializado para la atención de enfermedades infecciosas en todas partes).
