African Antibiotic Treatment Guidelines available

African Antibiotic Treatment Guidelines available

Africa CDC (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) and CDDEP (Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy) published the first edition of the African antibiotic treatment guidelines for common bacterial infections and syndromes. The guidelines provide recommendations for empiric antibiotic therapy for common bacterial infections and syndromes. Clinical definitions including common presenting symptoms and causative bacteria are also provided for each syndrome or infection, as are relevant stewardship principles and other clinical notes.

The Global-PPS makes use of ‘guideline compliance’ as a key quality indicator for appropriate antibiotic prescribing. To evaluate the quality of antibiotic prescriptions, the Global-PPS assesses whether the prescriptions are written according to antibiotic treatment guidelines. The African Antibiotic Treatment Guidelines might be of help for those hospitals where no local guidelines are available. To read and download the full guidelines, please follow this link.
