The Global-PPS Outpatient Module: a wealth of informative resources

Antimicrobial stewardship discussions often focus on hospitals, yet the majority of antibiotics are prescribed outside the inpatient setting. The Global-PPS Outpatient Module was created to close this critical knowledge gap. It provides outpatient clinics, primary care practices, emergency departments, and other ambulatory services with a standardized, practical method to measure antimicrobial prescribing patterns at the patient level. By capturing who receives antimicrobials, for what indications, and whether prescribing follows local guidelines, the outpatient module empowers facilities to identify clear targets for improvement.

Compared to the inpatient module, the outpatient version is tailored to the fast-paced, single-encounter nature of ambulatory care. This streamlined approach makes the survey easy to implement in settings where documentation varies and patient turnover is high.
