Last week, the Global Point Prevalence Survey community gathered for its annual meeting, held in collaboration with bioMérieux at the opening of the ESCMID Global 2026 congress in Munich. With 240 participants joining online and 34 attending in person, it was a vibrant and inspiring event centred on the theme Insights into antimicrobial consumption for enhanced antimicrobial stewardship: Findings from the Global PPS.
“Global-PPS is not just about the data. It’s about how we use these data to establish and improve antimicrobial stewardship programmes.” – Prof. Erika Vlieghe, Global-PPS Lead Investigator
The meeting brought together first-time users of the Global-PPS modules alongside seasoned members who have been part of the community since its inception over 12 years ago. It offered a platform to share Global-PPS results, explore strategies for addressing key challenges in antimicrobial use, and highlight both local needs and locally driven solutions. A particular highlight was the diverse lineup of speakers from Guinea, Mexico, Indonesia, Portugal, and the Philippines, as well as representatives from the Fleming Fund and the MSF network. Each presenter shared real-world experiences with implementing the Global-PPS in inpatient and outpatient settings, contributing valuable perspectives and practical lessons. The presentations sparked lively discussions among both online and onsite participants, reflecting the enthusiasm and collective commitment of the Global-PPS community.
Recordings of the meeting will be made available on the Global-PPS website in the coming weeks.
The Global-PPS delegates also presented four posters at ESCMID Global, sharing their latest research findings and insights:
- The global point prevalence survey (Global-PPS): trends of antimicrobial use in adult patients in the Philippines 2017-2024 – Presenter: Jemelyn Garcia
- Global point prevalence survey of antimicrobial consumption and resistance (Global-PPS): monitoring effectiveness of an EMR-assisted pre-authorisation requirement for non-guideline compliant surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis prescriptions at a tertiary hospital in the Philippines – Presenter: Maria Charmian Hufano
