paediatric patients from three hospitals in Sanandaj, Western Iran, with paediatric patients from hospitals in Southeast Asia and Europe. <\/em>Standardised 2019 Global-PPS data were used. <em>The study was conducted by Dr. Jafar Soltani, Associate Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and his team at Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. <\/em><\/p><h3><strong>Results<\/strong><\/h3><p>The research showed that 74.9% of admitted children and neonates in Sanandaj received antibiotics, which was higher than antibiotic prevalence observed in Southeast Asia (56.9%) and Europe (28.6%). Moreover,\u00a0 83% of antibiotics prescribed in Sanandaj were classified as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/WHO-MHP-HPS-EML-2023.04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch antibiotics<\/a>, raising concerns about their appropriate use.<\/p><p>Strikingly, no single health-care associated Infection (HAI) was recorded during the entire study period in Sanandaj hospitals, as compared to Southeast Asian (5.3%) and European hospitals (3.6%).<\/p><h3><strong>Identified barriers<\/strong><\/h3><p>A notable challenge in Sanandaj hospitals is the lack of laboratory diagnostic capacity, which only leads to empirical prescribing without microbiological data. This underscores the urgent need for enhancing diagnostic capabilities to guide appropriate treatment decisions.<\/p><p>Other barriers to implementing effective antimicrobial stewardship actions in Sanandaj include economic factors, such as the easy availability and low cost of antimicrobials, and regulatory challenges, including the lack of boundaries between over-the-counter drugs and prescription antimicrobials.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17645 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.global-pps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/32_1-e1710321121445.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p><h3><strong>The way forward<\/strong><\/h3><p>This study underlines the need for urgent interventions to improve antimicrobial prescribing practices among children in Sanandaj hospitals.
